Cowgirls beat Arkansas State
September 23, 2009
STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State scored four goals in the second half en route to a 5-0 win over Arkansas State Sunday at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
Siera Strawser collected a pair of goals, the fourth multi-goal game of her career, as the 21st-ranked improved to 6-3 on the season
“You score five goals, you’re gonna be pleased,” said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. “It’s nice to get Strawser back scoring — that’s gonna be important as we go on. Overall, I’m pleased with our play. You don’t know what the emotional letdown is gonna be from the USC game (Friday), but I thought we did a good job after the first 10 minutes of getting past that.”
OSU took a 1-0 lead into intermission on the strength of freshman Megan Marchesano’s fourth goal of the season. In the 27th minute, Kasey Langdon drilled a shot that ASU goalkeeper Susan Brown saved but was unable to contain. Marchesano was there to put the ball into the back of the net and get the Cowgirls on the scoreboard.
The Cowgirls added to their lead at the 57:27 mark when Bridget Miller connected with Annika Niemeier on Niemeier’s fourth goal of the season to give OSU a 2-0 advantage.
Just over 15 minutes later, Strawser notched the first of her two goals when she found the back of the net during a scramble in front of the goal.
“I’ve been frustrated at myself — I’ve been having a rough time with the easy goals the last couple of games,” Strawser said. “I tried to get back to the basics and start getting it into the net again.”
Katie Richardson would be the next Cowgirl to find the back of the net as she took a pass in stride from Sarah Brown and beat the defense for her third goal of the season.
Strawser capped the day with an impressive goal as she blasted a shot from 30 yards out past Brown for her second goal of the day and fourth of the year.
After Strawser had failed to score a goal in OSU’s last five games, Carmichael was pleased to see his senior All-Big 12 midfielder get back in a groove.
“We’ve been waiting,” Carmichael said. “(Strawser has) been really close. Against USC, she almost had two. She’s been the kid that’s been right there and finally a couple went in for her. The most important thing for a goal scorer is finishing, and she was able to do that today.”
With her final goal, Strawser became just the fourth player in OSU history to record 30 goals in a career as she moved into a tie for third on the Cowgirls’ all-time goals list. She is five shy of the school record of 35, held by Yolanda Odenyo and Jolene Schweitzer.
OSU returns to Big 12 Conference play Friday when it hosts Kansas at 7 p.m. The Cowgirls are 0-1 in league play after opening the season with a 1-0 loss at Colorado.
