Fairleigh-Dickinson men beat UMBC
September 26, 2010
The Fairleigh-Dickinson(m) University men's soccer team posted its third-straight win against UMBC on Sunday night at University Field in Teaneck, NJ. The Knights, who have not allowed an opponent more than one goal in the last three games, are now 4-3 on the season, while UMBC drops to 4-3 overall.
Senior Samson Malijani did not waste any time putting the Knights on the board, taking a rebound off the goalkeeper's save of sophomore Dominic Reinold's shot and firing it into the bottom of the net to put the Knights up 1-0. The goal, netted 5:39 into the game, was Malijani's second of the season; the assist was Reinold's second.
The Knights' offense was very accurate in the first half as their goal was the only shot in the first 27 minutes. The Retrievers' best first-half chance came on a free kick by Andrew Bulls in the 27th minute, but it was saved by FDU goalkeeper Jacob Lissek. The Knights held an 8-5 edge in shots in the first 45 minutes.
Recording his second tally of the game shortly into the second half, Malijani headed in the ball off of Reinold's free kick from the corner to give FDU the 2-0 advantage in the 41st minute of the game.
UMBC responded in the 35th minute after being awarded a penalty kick, which Levi Houapeu sank into the bottom left of the net, just out of the reach of diving Lissek.
UMBC had another offensive opportunity, as Houapeu found Bulls' feet in a scramble in front of the goal. The shot went across the goal and was blocked out by Kyle Saviano.
With 30 seconds remaining, the Retrievers had another opportunity, but Lissek came out of the goal to jump on the ball, squashing the momentum.
"I thought that this game was a great advertisement for college soccer," said Head Coach Seth Roland. "You had two teams who were committed to attacking and it was a wide open game. It is great to see Samson score two great goals and the entire team play in such a focused manner. I'm also pleased with how well we defended against such a dangerous attacking team. This was a good win."
The Knights remain home next weekend, when they open Northeast Conference playing, hosting St. Francis NY on Oct. 1 at 7:00 p.m. and Long Island at 1:00 pm on Oct. 3.
