Fairleigh Dickinson men defeat Manhattan
September 2, 2009
Less than 20 seconds into the Fairleigh Dickinson University men's soccer 2009 regular season, the Knights were on a roll as they found the net to take a lead against the Manhattan Jaspers. In the Knights' season opener, the newly installed University Field lights debuted for the first time with a 7:00 p.m. start time.
Sophomore Paul King (Newcastle, England), who recorded 20 points in his rookie campaign in 2008, netted the Knights' first goal of the season off a feed from freshman Dominic Reinold (Wesseling, Germany) 19 seconds into the match. Reinold found King on the left side, 12-yards out and King blasted it into the bottom right corner for the 1-0 lead.
Junior Majdi Zaineh (Clifton, NJ), between the posts for the Knights, made three saves to earn the shutout, while Manhattan goalkeeper Joseph Lorens made four saves.
The 2008 NEC defending champion Knights out-shot the Jaspers, 11-5, and the two teams were evenly matched in corner kicks, 4-4.
"It was great to win the first night game in FDU soccer history," said Head Coach Seth Roland. "The crowd was fantastic, the environment had a lot of energy and it was a good atmosphere to play in. I'm glad that we were able to provide our fans with a win and we look forward to crowds like this at FDU in the future."
The Knights are back in action on Sunday, Sept. 6, when they host Hofstra in a doubleheader with the women's team. The women's team will play Manhattan at 1:00 p.m., while the men will kick off at 5:00 p.m.
