FDU men beat Manhattan
The Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team opened the 2010 season with a 3-1 win at Manhattan on Wednesday evening.
The Jaspers scored first, as Daniel Festa's corner kick found Erick Montinard for a header that landed inside the left post, 12:54 into the game.
But the Knights responded in the 27th minute, as the 2009 Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year Dominic Reinold fed Samson Malijani, in his first game back after sitting out last season due to injury. The senior forward did not waste any time getting back into his offensive form as he ran past the keeper and fired the ball into the right corner from 25-yards out.
In the 46th minute, freshman forward Jonathan Gonzalez broke the tie to score what would be the game-winner, grabbing the rebound off a save and pushing it into the right side of the net.
Reinold added an insurance goal in the 88th minute as he took senior midfielder Kenley Mathurin's pass from midfield, running in for 20 yards before finding the back of the net on an open shot.
"It was a great way to start the season," said Head Coach Seth Roland. "We started off a little slowly in the first half, but then Sam [Malijani] pulled us even and we were much more dynamic and dangerous in the second half. It was good to see Sam, Dom [Reinold] and John [Gonzalez] on the board with goals. Dom was particularly productive by having a hand in the other two goals as well his goal."
The Knights open their home season on Saturday, Sept. 4 when they host Princeton at 7:00 p.m.
