Friday matches help narrow potentials for NCAA Men

Following is a summary of regular season and conference tournament play Friday in NCAA Men’s soccer.

America East: UMBC plays at Stony Brook Sunday in the final. Regular season champion New Hampshire is out.

Atlantic 10: Isaac Kissi, Jack Pearson and Jeff Popella each scored a goal for Dayton in a 3-1 victory over St. Bonaventure. The Flyers will meet Dan Donigan’s St. Louis(m) University Billikens in Sunday’s final, after the Bills beat Rhode Island 3-2 on a late winner from Tim Ream.

ACC: Diego Restrepo made the decisive save as Virginia beat Wake Forest on penalties. The Cavaliers will face NC State, who beat Boston College 1-0 on Ronnie Bouemboue’s winner.

Atlantic Sun: Jonathan Mendoza scored a late winner as Stetson beat East Tennessee State 3-2, while Mercer upset top-seeded Campbell 3-1.

Big East:  St. John's defeated Providence on goals from Walter Hines and Ben Clack. Derby Carillo recorded the shutout in goal. Notre Dame defeated Louisville on penalties as Philip Tuttle made the winning save for the Fighting Irish. The final is Sunday.

Big South: Alex Verville scored the winner as Liberty beat UNC Asheville. Djamel Bekka scored in a 1-0 win for Coastal Carolina over VMI. Winthrop defeated Gardner-Webb on penalties after playing to a 2-2 draw. Radford upset High Point 4-3.

Big Ten: Ohio State beat Indiana 4-2 on goals from Andrew Magill, Sam Scales, Joe Moore and Konrad Warzycha. Penn State beat Michigan State 3-0 behind a hat trick from Corey Hertzog.

Big West: UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara are in Saturday’s final of the tournament after winning Wednesday night.  

CAA: UNC Wilmington beat Old Dominion 1-0 on a 1st half goal from Allen Lomax. Andre Ciliotta scored a golden goal to keep Northeastern’s NCAA hopes alive with a 2-1 win over William & Mary(m).

Conference USA: Neil Austin scored twice to lead Tulsa past Kentucky 2-1 in one semifinal, while UAB lost on penalties to Marshall after a scoreless draw in the other. The Thundering Herd meets the Golden Hurricane in Sunday’s final.

Horizon: Butler defeated Cleveland State 2-1 while Wisconsin-Green Bay knocked off Valparaiso 3-1, to set up the anticipated final Sunday.

Ivy: Harvard wins the regular season if they defeat Penn at home Saturday. Brown could leapfrog the Crimson with a win over Dartmouth and some help. Princeton helped its chances with a 4-0 win over Yale Friday evening. Antoine Hoppenot had a hat trick for the Tigers.

Metro Atlantic: Iona College(m) will wait anxiously for a possible NCAA bid after being upset by Niagara on penalties in a semifinal Friday. Wade McHugh scored twice as Loyola (MD) beat Fairfield 3-0.

MAC: Akron’s Darlington Nagbe scored in overtime to keep the Zips perfect and provide a win over Northern Illinois. Akron will face Hartwick in Sunday’s final after the Hawks beat Western Michigan 3-2 in the other semifinal.

Missouri Valley: Evansville kept its NCAA hopes alive with a 2-1 win over Missouri State in overtime. Tom Irvin scored the winner for the Aces, while Tad Kreamalmeyer had scored in regulation, with Heath Melugin providing Missouri State’s goal. In the nightcap, Drake beat Creighton 3-1.

Mountain Pacific: Matt Linenberger scored in overtime as Sacramento State defeated UNLV 1-0 in one semifinal, New Mexico beat Denver 1-0 on a Justin Davis goal to set up  Sunday’s final.

Northeast: Cody Calafiore scored twice to lift Monmouth over Fairleigh-Dickinson(m), while Quinnipiac defeated St. Francis (NY)(m) on penalties.

Pac-10: UCLA has won the regular season title. The three closing matches are Saturday.

Patriot: Bucknell beat Lafayette in overtime on a Conor O’Brien goal, to set up a championship match showdown with American, who beat Lehigh 6-5 on penalties after 110 minutes of scoreless play. Cameron Petty knocked home the decisive spot kick for AU.

Southern: Elon beat College of Charleston 2-0 on a pair of goals from Chris Thomas. Wofford ousted  UNC Greensboro 3-1 on 2 goals from Wilson Hood, setting up Sunday’s final between the Phoenix and the Terriers.

Summit: Western Illinois beat IUPUI(m) 1-0 and UMKC(m) defeated hosts Oakland 2-1 to set up a WIU-UMKC final for Sunday.

West Coast: San Diego clinched the regular season title with a scoreless draw against St. Mary's (CA), who finishes 2nd.
