Fullerton men beat UC Davis

October 29, 2010
FULLERTON, CALIF. -  Nick Posthuma’s golden goal with 3:21 remaining in the first overtime Wednesday night gave Cal State Fullerton a 2-1 Big West Conference men’s soccer victory over UC Davis.

The win broke a tie for third place between the teams and lifted Fullerton to 4-4 in conference and 6-8-2 overall.  The Aggies fell to 3-5 in conference and 5-11 overall after their first overtime game of the season.  Fullerton is now 1-0-2 in extra time.

Posthuma took a perfect cross from Celso Alvarez and left-footed a shot from the corner of the penalty box past goalkeeper Omar Zeenni for his team-leading eighth goal of the year and second game winner.

Alvarez also assisted on the Titans’ first goal with a hard cross that bounced off Zeenni and Michael Denny knocked the loose ball into the net for a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute.

Davis tied the match in the 69th minute when Alex Aguiar was left unmarked about 25 yards out and converted a pass from Dan Reese into a goal in the upper left-hand corner beyond freshman goalkeeper Bryan Escalante.  Escalanate had entered the match with 24:03 to play when starter Trevor Whiddon suffered a head injury and the first shot the product of nearby Valencia High School saw sailed past him.  Whiddon returned 8 minutes later and finished up the match to get the win.

Fullerton host San Diego State Saturday night in a non-conference game while the Aggies host Cal Poly in Big West action.
