Hofstra women beat JMU
September 24, 2010
HARRISONBURG, Va., Sept. 24, 2010 - The Hofstra women's soccer team ran its winning streak to seven games with a 1-0 victory at James Madison in Colonial Athletic Association action Friday evening at the JMU Soccer Complex.
The Pride improved to 7-1-0 on the first night of league play of the season. JMU dropped to 4-5-0 overall.
Hofstra's goal came in the 21st minute on a free kick by sophomore Amy Turner (Stocksbridge, England/Stocksbridge). Turner struck the ball from 35 yards out on the right side of the field, and it sailed into the far left corner of the goal.
Both teams had a number of scoring opportunities, and the Dukes had several chances in the opening period.
A header by JMU freshman Haley Miller (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) in the 12th minute was just wide of the goal. In the 15th minute, Hofstra senior goalkeeper Krista Thorn (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) made a stop on a one-on-one with senior Cate Tisinger (Clifton, Va./Centreville).
In the 32nd minute Dukes' freshman Lauren Wilson (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown) sent a ball into the box to Tisinger, who, despite being sandwiched between two defenders, got a shot off. The shot however, sailed over the goal.
In the second half Hofstra junior Brittany Butts (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) struck a shot in the 55th minute that sailed just over the goal.
One of JMU's best chances came in the 72nd minute, when sophomore Amalya Clayton (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) crossed the ball into the box from the right corner. Redshirt freshman Theresa Naquin (Herndon, Va./Herndon) got her head on the ball, but her shot went over the crossbar.
Hofstra senior Salma Tarik (Bellmore, N.Y./Rosamond, Calif.) had two scoring opportunities in the late stages of the game. In the 76th minute junior Laura Greene (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) sent a ball into the box on a square pass, and Tarik headed the ball just wide of the goal. Several minutes later, Greene again found Tarik in the box, but her shot was wide.
JMU had one final chance in the closing seconds. Freshman Becky Sparks (Laurel Springs, N.J./Paul VI) lofted a ball from the left side of the field toward the far corner of the goal, but freshman goalkeeper Emily Morphitis (London, England/Therfield) leaped to make the save with 18 seconds on the clock.
Hofstra out-shot JMU 13-10, and Thorn and Morphitis combined for three saves in the shutout. Thorn made one stop in the first half, and Morphitis played the second period and made two saves. JMU redshirt senior goalkeeper Diane Wszalek (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) finished with three saves.
"We didn't really create a lot offensively, and that's sort of been the story of our season right now. We've been shut out a couple of times, (and) this was the third 1-0 loss at home. We're still trying to find that offensive scoring combination," JMU head coach Dave Lombardo said.
NOTES:
* Of JMU's nine games this season, eight of them have been decided by a single goal. The Dukes are 4-4 in one-goal games.
* Hofstra posted its third consecutive shutout; all were by 1-0 scores.
