Indiana men fall to Cal Poly
September 11, 2010
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – A tally of 16 shots, seven of which were on frame, was not enough for No. 18 Indiana as the Hoosiers gave up a late goal to Cal Poly in a 1-0 loss Friday night at the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament on the campus of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.
The Hoosiers drop to 1-2 on the season, while Cal Poly improves to 2-1.
“We did not play our best game today,” said head coach Todd Yeagley, “nowhere near it. But you learn from your mistakes and move on to the next game.”
The game-winning score came from Chris Bernardi at 82:48 as he hit a low shot to the lower left. Prior to that the Hoosiers had been peppering the Cal Poly net but could not put the ball past the goal line.
Will Bruin led the Hoosiers with six shots, three of which were on goal. Alec Purdie had three attempts, as did defender Caleb Konstanski who came forward in the waning minutes as Indiana searched for the equalizer. Luis Soffner played all 90 minutes in goal, racking up four saves.
Nikita Kotlov opened the match with a quick shot in the first minute, making his way around a pair of defenders but sent the shot high. Five minutes in a bad giveaway by Cal Poly left Bruin open on the right but his shot was gobbled up by goalkeeper Patrick McLain.
A give-and-go from Bruin to Harrison Petts nearly resulted in a score in the 16th minute but Petts’ attempt to chip McLain resulted in a save for the goalkeeper. With 14:30 to play, Purdie had a shot from about 10 yards out that was just tipped wide, ultimately leading to a pair of corner kicks for the Hoosiers.
With 12:40 to play in the first half a free kick from Andy Adlard found the head of Bruin but the junior’s attempt was just a few inches high. Bruin led in a ball to Blake Wise and the freshman was able to out-run his defender but had his shot blocked to set up a corner kick, one of five in the first half for the Hoosiers.
Wise put in one of his dangerous long throw ins in the final minutes and caught McLain off his line but Bruin’s attempt was just ticked wide.
Indiana opened the second half pressuring the ball, playing in Cal Poly’s final third for the first three minutes. Soffner was forced to make a diving save to his left on a shot from David Zamora and the rebound went out to Tim White but that shot was blocked by Konstanski. Less than three minutes later Zamora again got behind the Hoosiers but Soffner again was up to the task with his second save of the half. Konstanski had another shot block, this time on a Chris Gaschen attempt.
Bruin broke free off a ball from Cameron Jordan but his shot went right to McLain for the save.
In the 79th minute, Tommy Meyer sent a free kick into the box and Bruin got off a shot that was kick saved by goalkeeper Chris Violas, who had to come on for an injured McLain. That led to a corner kick and Purdie got his head on the ball but defender Patrick Sigler saved the ball off the line to keep the match scoreless.
With Daniel Kelly unavailable due to injury, junior Tyler McCarroll made his first career start, taking over the left back spot. Junior Chris Estridge moved over to the right back spot normally occupied by Kelly.
Indiana is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 12 as it closes out the tournament with a match vs. Drake. Match time is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and fans can listen to the game live on IUHoosiers.com.
