James Madison men defeat Penn State
September 22, 2009
HARRISONBURG, Va., Sept. 20, 2009 -- James Madison senior Billy Swetra (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Absegami) recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Dukes to a 3-0 win over visiting Penn State in men's soccer Sunday afternoon at the JMU Soccer Complex.
JMU improved to 5-1-0 as Dukes' redshirt junior goalkeeper Ken Manahan (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) made four saves to record his and the team's fifth consecutive shutout. Penn State dropped to 4-3-0.
Swetra opened the scoring at the 25:00 mark in the first half. After a long throw-in from junior Torey Beiro (McLean, Va./McLean), sophomore Jason Gannon (Vienna, Va./Flint Hill) flicked on a header that Swetra pulled out of traffic and finished from six yards.
The Dukes continued the scoring in the 65th minute when redshirt junior Andrew Harvey (Herndon, Va./Herndon) played a ball to junior CJ Sapong (Manassas, Va./Forest Park). Sapong’s play through traffic ended up at the feet of freshman Paul Wyatt (Modbury, England/Ivybridge), who was able to sneak the ball into the net from five yards out.
Sophomore Patrick Innes (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) finished the scoring for the Dukes in the 70th minute when Swetra chipped a ball across the box and Innes was able to head it into the right corner of the net.
The game was played fairly evenly with JMU holding only a 13-9 advantage in shots and only forcing two saves out of redshirt junior goalkeeper Warren Gross (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs), who started and played the first half, and one out of Heffner, who came on at halftime.
