August 31, 2009
HARRISONBURG, Va., Aug. 30, 2009 -- Senior Corky Julien (Williamstown, Ontario/Char-Lan District) recorded a hat trick to lead James Madison to a 3-0 defeat of Bucknell in Sunday’s final round of the JMU/Comfort Inn Harrisonburg Invitational Women’s Soccer Tournament.
In the first game of the day Towson defeated Xavier 2-1 in overtime.
Julien recorded the only goal of the first half after receiving a through ball from sophomore Lisa Heise (Brandon, Fla./Nease), who had flicked on a pass from freshman Katie Menzie (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly). Julien then beat senior goalkeeper Kathryn Sutton (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) with a shot to the right side of the goal.
In the second half, Julien scored two more goals in the span of less than two minutes. The first score came at 57:17 when Julien received a pass from senior Ashley Flateland (Fox Island, Wash./Gig Harbor) about 40 yards out. Julien dribbled through the defense and fired a 15-yard shot that caught the right post and deflected into the net.
The final tally came at 58:55 as Julien took a pass from junior Cate Tisinger (Clifton, Va./Centreville) and fired a shot from almost on the endline that ducked into the left corner of the goal.
Bucknell had a prime scoring opportunity when a foul by redshirt junior goalkeeper Diane Wszalek (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) gave the Bison a penalty kick in the 82nd minute, but junior Kelliann Doherty (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) pushed her attempt wide left.
The Dukes were in the attacking half for most of the game, outshooting the Bison 20-4 and forcing eight saves out of Sutton. Sunday’s game brought the Dukes shot differential for the two-game tournament to 44-8.
Wszalek only needed to make one save for the Dukes to preserve the shutout.
In the first game, with 57 seconds left in the first overtime, Towson freshman Cheyenne Skidmore (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) served a cross into the box from the right endline that senior Phyllicia Rosselli (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) merely had to nudge into the bottom-left corner of the net for the game-winner.
Towson got on the scoreboard in the early going. Skidmore sent a pass from the left endline into the box, where senior Erica Marshall (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) knocked the ball into the right side of the goal from six yards out. The score came in the 12th minute.
Xavier tied the game just before halftime. The play began when junior Carly Wenzel (Carmel, Ind./Cathedral) lofted a pass from near midfield across the field and into the box, where senior Brittany Green (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) one-timed a 12-yard shot to the far side of the net. The tying score came with 3:35 left before halftime.
Both teams had scoring chances in the final minutes of regulation.
Xavier's Green got a shot off on a breakaway with 3:04 remaining, but sophomore goalkeeper Jocelyn Papciak (Columbia, Md./Atholton) redirected the shot out of bounds.
In the final minute of regulation, Towson senior Brittany Hadaway (Pasadena, Md./Notre Dame) fired a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced back into the field of play. Marshall fielded the rebound and took a shot to the right side of the goal, but Xavier senior Loren Marshall (Copper Canyon, Texas/Marcus) cleared the attempt away just before it crossed the endline.
Towson outshot the Musketeers 13-8, including a 3-0 differential in overtime. Senior goalkeeper Kelly Farrell (Manteca, Calif./East Union) recorded five saves for Xavier, while Papciak had three for Towson.
