November 6, 2010
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y., Nov. 5, 2010 -- Second-seeded James Madison advanced to the title game of the CAA Women’s Soccer Championship, edging third-seeded George Mason 6-5 on penalty kicks after the two squads battled to a 1-1 double-overtime tie Friday evening at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

The Dukes (13-6-1) will play in Sunday’s 1 p.m. championship game for the second year in a row against the winner of #1 Hofstra, a 3-0 winner over #4 Georgia State in Friday's second semifinal. The Patriots, who were making their first CAA Tournament appearance since 2007, saw their season come to an end at 11-7-2.

Mason turned to freshmen goalkeeper Lyndse Hokanson off the bench during penalty kicks, and she gave the Patriots an early advantage by stopping Yolie Anderson-Golhor’s attempt in the second round.  However, JMU senior goalkeeper Diane Wszalek, who didn’t make a save during 110 minutes of play, blocked Abby Zielinski’s attempt in the third round to keep things even at 2-2.  After both squads converted their next three attempts, JMU junior Jessica Barndt gave the Dukes a 6-5 advantage by beating Hokanson to the right side.  The match ended when freshman Janice Johnson’s shot bounced off the bottom of the crossbar.

Mason put only one of its 11 shots on goal during the match, but made it count in the 24th minute.  Sophomore Tiana Kallenberger lofted a long pass from the midfield to senior Omolyn Davis at the top of the box.  Davis, a first-team All-CAA selection, was able to hold off her defender and sent a shot past Wszalek to the left corner of the net from 15 yards out. The goal was the team-leading 10th of the season for Davis, who leads the CAA with 29 points.

The Dukes turned up the pressure offensively in the second half and got the equalizer in the 68th minute.  Off a corner kick, sophomore Katie Menzie tapped a short pass to senior Teresa Rynier, who crossed the ball to Becky Sparks in the left side of the box. The freshman’s header from 10 yards out hit the right post and bounced into the net to tie the match at 1-1. It was Sparks’ first collegiate goal, while Rynier recorded her league-leading 11th assist.

JMU had several other excellent scoring chances in the second half. With 20 minutes remaining, senior Cate Tisinger fired a hard shot from 12 yards out, but Mason keeper Alex Bodenschatz came up with a diving save. Six minutes later, freshman Sam Lofton’s 15-yard shot was tipped wide of the net by a diving Bodenschatz.  With 13 minutes left, Menzie had a header from the middle of the box go over the crossbar.

JMU finished with a 15-11 advantage in shots and had a 5-2 edge in corners.  Bodenschatz had five saves for the Patriots.
