James Madison women defeat Towson

September 30, 2009
HARRISONBURG, Va. – After winning a pair of games at James Madison University earlier in the season, the Tigers entered Sunday’s match-up against the Dukes hoping that the success continued. However, the host Dukes (6-4-0, 2-0-0) spoiled the Tigers’ chances by posting a 3-2 victory over Towson (5-5-1, 1-1-0) at the JMU Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Senior forward Corky Julien scored the game-winning goal with 5:19 remaining in the first overtime period as the Dukes improved to 4-1 at home this season.

“It was a disappointing result but I think we played really tough today,” Towson Coach Greg Paynter said. “It was encouraging to see the type of quality soccer that we can play. We were right there with the league’s best and it was a very competitive and even match.”

The Dukes took a quick 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when sophomore defender Jessica Barndt scored off a long pass from junior midfielder Teresa Rynier after a James Madison restart.

The Dukes held the one-goal advantage until Marshall scored on a free kick from 35 yards away with 17:55 remaining in regulation for her fifth goal of the season.

However, the Dukes regained the one-goal cushion with 6:13 left in regulation when junior forward Cate Tisinger scored on a shot from a sharp angle that hit the right goal post and went in. For Tisinger, it was her third goal of the season.

Trailing by 2-1, the Tigers got a major break in the final minute of regulation after receiving a penalty kick when a James Madison defender was called for a foul in the penalty area. Marshall took the attempt, which was stopped by junior goalkeeper Diane Wszalek. However, the rebound went to freshman Cheyenne Skidmore, who had her shot deflected.

Marshall collected the rebound and scored with 42 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.

The Dukes controlled play during the overtime period by outshooting the Tigers by a 4-0 margin. With just under five minutes remaining in the overtime period, Rynier sent a pass along the right side to Tisinger, who sent a crossing pass to Julien. Then, Julien took a shot from near the edge of the penalty area which got past junior goalkeeper Kristen Sample to give the Dukes the victory. It was Julien’s CAA-leading tenth goal of the season.

While Julien scored her fifth game-winning goal of the season, Rynier tallied three assists in the victory for the Dukes. She now has 34 career assists, moving into second place on the James Madison career list.

Marshall led the Tigers in the loss with her fifth career two-goal game. She also moved into a tie for fifth place on the Tigers’ career points list and now has 49 career points.

Sample made five saves in a losing effort for the Tigers, who were outshot by a 15-12 margin.

The Tigers will return home on Friday afternoon to host Northeastern University at the Towson Center Soccer Complex at 3 p.m. Meanwhile, the Dukes will host UNC Wilmington on Friday night at 7 p.m.
