November 14, 2010

CHAPEL HILL, N.C., Nov. 14, 2010 - Third-ranked North Carolina scored two goals in the second half to break the 1-1 tie and defeat James Madison 3-1 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Fetzer Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Tarheels (19-2-2) will advance to next Saturday's round of 16 to take on Notre Dame at home, while the Dukes dropped to 15-7-1 with the defeat.

UNC jumped out to the early 1-0 lead in the seventh minute. Kealia Ohai found Krystal Dunn in the box and she turned and fired into the top left corner of the net to give the Tarheels the one-goal advantage.

In the 20th minute, UNC nearly doubled its lead. Meghan Klingenberg shot from the top of the box, but senior Diane Wzsalek (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) dove to make the save near the right post to give the Heels a corner. On the corner, Megan Brigman's header was once again saved by Wzsalek.

The Dukes tied the contest with 15:24 remaining in the half. Freshman Lauren Wilson (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown) took a shot from 35 yards out that found the open net for her eighth tally of the season after sophomore Amalya Clayton (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) deflected the ball off UNC goalkeeper Hannah Daly and Wilson took it and fired on the empty net.

Wilson almost found the net for a second time with just under two minutes remaining before halftime. Freshman Sam Lofton (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) passed from the left side of midfield and found Wilson all alone just outside the box, but her shot was saved by Daly.

The Tarheels regained the lead at 2-1 with 40:29 remaining in the contest. Ohai fed the ball into the left corner where Klingenberg crossed into the box and Amber Brooks connected with a header into the right corner of the net.

UNC took a 3-1 lead in the 65th minute after getting three shots off in the box. JMU blocked a pair of shots right in front of the net by the Tarheels, but Klingenberg corralled the ball and found Dunn, who finished it off in the left side of the net with 25:41 to play.

The Heels outshot JMU 19-4 in the contest and had a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks. Wszalek made a game-high six saves and Wilson had a team-high three shots, two of which were on goal.
