Looking at coaching changes for 2011
December 21, 2010
College soccer’s offseason can be every bit as intriguing as its season. Among the juiciest plot lines that will play out in the coming months are the hires and firings of coaches at some top programs.

Today we look at the vacancies and recent appointments on the women’s side leading up to the 2011 season.

clemson women's college soccer coachClemson's new head coach, Eddie Radwanski.
Clemson
Out: Hershey Strosberg. It was announced last month that Strosberg would not be returning after three seasons at the helm.
In: Eddie Radwanski. He spent the past 10 seasons at UNC Greensboro where he amassed a record of 140-65-13 and took the Spartans to the NCAA Tournament on five occasions.
Outlook: There is work to be done. Clemson is 14-39-1 over the last three seasons with an ACC mark of 1-28-1.

Virginia Tech
Out: Kelly Cagle. She stepped down after a successful eight-year tenure that left her as the winningest coach in program history.
In: Charles “Chugger” Adair. He served as the associate head coach for the Hokies for the past five seasons. This is his first head coaching gig.
Outlook: Adair is familiar with the program and has a good framework to work with as Virginia Tech has enjoyed some success despite playing in the ultra competitive ACC.

Miami (FL)
Out: Tricia Taliaferro. The program announced they would not be renewing Taliaferro’s contract last month after nine seasons.
In: Vacant
Outlook: The Hurricanes have missed the NCAA Tourney the past two seasons and are looking for a jolt.

UAB
Out: Paul Harbin. He retired after 15 seasons at the helm.
In: Vacant
Outlook: Harbin was obviously a staple at the program, so the incoming coach will have to work to make the program their own. There is room for improvement, however, if the Blazers intend to truly make their mark in Conference USA.

Temple
Out: David Jones. He announced his resignation after eight seasons.
In: Vacant
Outlook:
The Owls are still trying to turn the corner as a program. They’ve had just three coaches in their history, with Jones fairing just 38-95-14 overall.

hawaii women's college soccer coachHawaii's new head coach, Michele Nagamine
Hawaii
Out: Pinsoom Tenzing. Hawaii’s first and only head coach, Tenzing retired after guiding the Rainbows from an upstart club team to an official program.
In: Michele Nagamine. A local coaching mind, Nagamine spent the last years at the helm of Hawaii Pacific University.
Outlook: Hawaii is coming off one of its worst seasons but brings in a coach with a reputation for turning programs around.

Montana
Out: Neil Sedgwick. Contract was not renewed.
In: Vacant
Outlook: Montana has won four Big Sky titles in the last 10 years but has fallen on hard times with just 16 wins in the last four seasons and one conference tourney appearance.

Iona College(w)
Out: Eric Teepe.
In: Mike Barroqueiro. He brought life to College of Charleston, leading the program to 33 win in his three seasons.
Outlook: Iona College(w) will need a similar rejuvenation from Barroqueiro if they are to take a step forward.

Georgia Southern

Out: Ashley Hart. Contract was not renewed.
In: Lindsey Vanderspiegel. Served as a Hofstra assistant for the last four seasons.
Outlook: It’s a rebuilding job, but a good opportunity for a young coach like Vanderspiegel to shine in her first head coaching position.

Rhode Island
Out: Zac Shaw. Resigned after six seasons as coach.
In: Vacant
Outlook: Atlantic 10 member Rhode Island is looking for its first winning season since 2007 … and a coach who can deliver it.
