North Carolina men to meet Akron Friday

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 5 seed North Carolina will open its second consecutive trip to the NCAA College Cup Friday against top-seeded Akron at7:30 p.m. at Cary’s WakeMed Soccer Park. The second national semifinal between TarHeels (16-2-3) and Zips (23-0-0) will air live on ESPNU and will be showntape-delayed on ESPN2 at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Virginia and Wake Forest will meet in the first semifinal at 5 p.m. The Atlantic Coast Conference has made up three-quarters ofthe College Cup field in each of the last two seasons. The Tar Heels and Demon Deacons are the only two teams to advance to each of the last two College Cups.
North Carolina is unbeaten in three all-time meetings against Akron with a 2-0-1 mark. The Tar Heels and Zips last met inthe 2007 Wake Forest adidas Classic in Winston-Salem, N.C., with UNC claiming a3-0 victory. The Tar Heels posted overtime wins over Akron in the 2002 CarolinaNike Classic and in an early season tournament in Columbia, S.C., in 1982.
