UC Irvine men fall to UCSB

IRVINE, Calif. – The No. 19 UC Irvine men’s soccer team (12-5, 5-3) lost 1-0 to No. 4 UC Santa Barbara Saturday night in Big West Conference play at Anteater Stadium.
The ‘Eaters and Gauchos played a physical 100 minutes as the match headed into the second overtime. The Gauchos were awarded a free kick on the left side of the field. Danny Barrera took the kick for UCSB and sent it to the far side of the box to Martin Hedevag who put it into the box where Tim Pontius knocked it in giving UCSB the 1-0 victory at the 102:56 mark.
Junior keeper Victor Chinchilla (Palmdale/Taft College) had five saves for the ‘Eaters. Keeper Sam Hayden had six saves and earned the shutout for the Gauchos.
The ‘Eaters travel to Riverside Wednesday to face UC Riverside at 7:00 p.m. in Big West action at UCR Soccer Stadium.
