USD women beat Michigan
August 30, 2010
SAN DIEGO, Calif.- Junior forward Stephanie Ochs celebrated her 20th birthday in style Sunday night by scoring her second goal in as many games to help propel the No. 22 University of San Diego Toreros to victory over the University of Michigan at Torero Stadium. USD has now won their first three matches of the season, including both games of the weekend tournament, and sits at 3-0-0.
USD got on the board in the 15th minute when Ochs corralled a pass from Kelley McCloskey inside the box and maneuvered around a Wolverine defender to score the game's first goal.
In the second half, Torero freshman midfielder Taylor Housley notched her first collegiate goal during the 63rd minute when she stole the ball off a deflection and connected from 25 yards out.
Anchoring the Torero defense was goalkeeper Courtney Parsons, who stonewalled the Wolverines for her second shutout of the year. The junior recorded nine saves on the night including an acrobatic stop from her knees at the 12:41 mark. Even though Michigan tallied 11 shots on the night, compared to USD's five, the Wolverines were unable to find the net.
Wolverine keeper Haley Kopmeyer, who had two saves, took the loss as the Wolverines experienced their first defeat of the season and leave San Diego with a 2-1-1 overall record.
The Toreros look to continue their success when they travel to Minneapolis, Minn. to face Marquette University Friday Sept. 3 at 2:30 pm PT and then the University of Minnesota Sunday Sept. 5 at 11:00 am PT.
