BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 17 Virginia Tech Hokies scored with four seconds remaining in the game to break a 1-1 tie and claim a 2-1 victory over the Miami Hurricanes. Senior leader Emily Jukich provided
the game-winner for the Hokies, who now boast a near program-best 8-1 record at Thompson Field. The
defeat also ends a two-year tying streak between the two teams and keeps the Hokies lossless against the
Hurricanes in ACC play. Miami’s Brittany Steinbruch was the first to score in the match while Tech’s
Jennifer Harvey also scored for the Hokies.

Though the Hokies held the upper hand in the first half, outshooting the Hurricanes 7-3, the first period
was full of back-and-forth play. In the 43rd minute, Miami got things going when Steinbruch slipped in
a goal just before halftime. Steinbruch dribbled the ball up Tech’s end of the field, changing direction
15 yards out to lose the defenders, then sailing the ball into the opposite side of the net, just past Tech’s
diving keeper.

The second half would begin and end with Tech attacking Miami’s keeper Vikki Alonzo. The Hokies
outshot the ‘Canes 13-1 in the half, also taking a whopping 10 corner kicks in the final period. After
numerous attempts, Tech would finally get on the board in the 75th minute when Harvey tipped in the
equalizer off a Julian Johnson throw-in. Johnson tossed the ball into the crowded box and Harvey was
able to get a foot on it before it touched the ground, placing it into the wide open, bottom right side of
the net.

Continuing to attack, Tech came close in the 78th minute when Marika Gray and the Hokies drew
Alonzo all the way out to the top of the 18 yard box but the keeper was able to block the first Gray
attempt and a defender would block the next as they eventually controlled the ball and cleared it out.
With 17 seconds remaining the match, Miami’s Kate Howarth received a yellow card, awarding Tech a
free kick from just beyond midfield. Keeper Kristin Carden sent the ball down field for the Hokies, into
a crowded 18 yard box. As both teams scrambled in the box, Jukich rose above and got a head on the
loose ball, sending it into the back of the net for the win, with four seconds remaining in the match.
Carden finished the night facing four shots and making two saves while Alonzo tallied four saves in the
match facing 20 shots, eight on goal.

The Hokies will conclude their regular season at home on Sunday, Nov. 1 as they host, No. 4 Florida
State at Noon.
