CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia Tech’s women’s soccer team knocked off in-state rival Virginia for the second-straight year in regular season play. The 2-1 victory over the Cavaliers is the most goals the Hokies have ever scored against their rival. Senior Robin Chidester put the Hokies on the board in the first half while senior Julian Johnson put up a repeat performance against Virginia, as she was the lone goal scorer in the 1-0 victory last season, netting the eventual game-winner for the Hokies in the second half on Wednesday.  

Though the Hokies (9-2-0, 3-0-0 ACC) took just two shots in the first half, compared to eight taken by the Cavaliers (6-3-2, 1-2-0 ACC), they were able to go ahead in the 38th minute when Chidester netted her first goal of the season from 15 yards out after bringing the ball all the way up the field on her own.  

After the break, Tech persevered through a Cavalier-dominated second half. The Cavs out-shot the Hokies, 13-6, in the half but Johnson would again decide the game for Tech as she chipped the ball over the keeper after freshman Julia Goldsworthy slipped it through the defenders. The 75th minute score was the third of the season for Johnson and the second assist for Goldsworthy.  

Virginia’s Lauren Alwine attempted a comeback for the Cavaliers as she netted her fifth goal of the season in the 83rd minute. Alwine knocked in a loose ball from five yards out in front of the goal. Meghan Lencyzk and Sinead Farrelly were credited with assists on the play.

Tech’s keeper Kristen Carden was reminded of last season’s ACC Tournament as the Cavaliers were granted a penalty kick after a Tech foul in the box in the 12th minute. Carden came up big for the Hokies, saving the potential goal for her first of five saves on the night. Virginia’s keeper Chantel Jones finished the match with five saves, while facing eight shots.

The Hokies will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 5 p.m., as they host the defending ACC and national champions, North Carolina.
