Western Illinois women defeat Grand View

September 28, 2009
MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois women's soccer team defeated Grand View by a score of 7-0, Saturday, Sept. 26.

The Fighting Leathernecks got a goal from Katie Condon just over two minutes in to the match and never looked back as they scored a season-high seven goals.

Condon's goal came in the 3rd minute when Keeley Murray sent in a corner kick and Condon nailed a shot from just outside the net for the game-winner.

"I thought we looked really good on offense today," Western Illinois head coach Tony Guinn said. "We did a really good job of possessing the ball today and we had a lot of positive energy out there today."

The Leathernecks would strike one more time in the first half when Abby Davis took a pass from Keeley Murray after a Grand View foul and scored from 20 yards out to give Western a 2-0 lead heading in to halftime.

"We've had a lot of opportunities throughout the year to score goals," Guinn said. "It's been a little disheartening to have a lot of quality chances in other games and not put it in but today we looked great and I feel a lot more comfortable now."

Western Illinois would start the second half quickly, when Caitlin Barrett took a pass from Demi Vance and scored her first goal of the season in the 46th minute of the match.

The Leathernecks would score four more times in the match. Kellie Julius scored two goals in the match, giving her three on the season. Nora Potempa and Chrissy Campbell both picked up their first goals of the season.

"I thought we did a really good job of hanging on to the ball today," Julius said. "It felt great to go out there and score a bunch of goals. It was a really big boost for us to go out and have a complete effort from everybody."

"We had a really positive energy going out there today and we really just trusted each other today, that was really the key.

Western Illinois goalkeeper Meghan Tyk held Grand View scoreless to pick up her third win of the season. Tyk's victory gives her 20 in her career at Western, placing her in a tie for first place in school history.

"It feels really awesome to get a win no matter what number win it is," Tyk said. "Our communication was really good today and everyone stepped up for us today."

"Our schedule is gonna get a little tougher with conference play coming up but we're really working hard and we'll be able to play well from here on out.

Tyk also recorded her second shutout of the season, giving her nine for her career and putting her just one shutout away from tying the school record for career shutouts.

"Meghan's worked really hard to get to where she is," Western Illinois goalkeeper coach Jason Cherry said. "I'm really happy for her, it's a really special moment and I hope she enjoys it and has a lot of time to reflect on it."

"In practice and in matches she's always picking up little things and improving. She spent the summer over in Ireland and I think that really helped her a lot because she got a lot of playing time and experienced a different style in play.

The final statistics from the match showed the Leathernecks outshooting Grand View by a 25 to three margin, including a 16 to three advantage in shots on goal. Western Illinois had seven corners to Grand View's three and the Vikings committed six fouls to Western's five.

"I think this win is big for us as we head in to conference play," Guinn said. "We had two former players (Robyn Ruypers and Ashley Hoch) come today and talk to the team before the match."

"They talked to the girls about what it meant to play at Western and the type of attitude and pride they should play with. I thought that made a really big difference today to have our girls hear that from two of the best players we've ever had here.

The Leathernecks will open Summit League play at home with a 1 p.m. match against IUPUI on Saturday, Oct. 3.
