Another U17 World Cup player commits
July 19, 2011
Joseph Amon is probably best known for his prominent role on the U.S. U17 Men’s National Team. And while Amon is certainly an eye-catching defensive presence on the field, it’s his commitment to academics off the field that informed his recent college decision.
Amon verbally committed to North Carolina(m) for the 2012 season as much for what Chapel Hill has to offer as what the Tar Heels do.
“School comes first, and the reason I chose North Carolina is because its academic program is among the best in the nation,” Amon said. “That’s what made it the right choice.”
A prospect of South Carolina United, Amon was invited into U.S. Soccer Residency because of his work in the defensive midfield. He played in last month’s FIFA U17 World Cup where he logged heavy minutes for the U.S. side alongside the likes of Kendall McIntosh, Matt Dunn, Zach Carroll and Paul Arriola.
Amon, who is the No. 8 ranked player in our 2012 Top 100 List, also gave some strong consideration to joining stateside programs South Carolina(m) and Clemson(m) before ultimately heading north.
St. Louis Scott Gallagher Metro standout Justin Bilyeu is another headline grabber after he committed to SIU-Edwardsville(m) (SIUE) for the 2012 season.
Bilyeu is the No. 56 player on our Top 100 List, and brings with him great size and the versatility to play a few different positions.
Bilyeu said his commit process was an intense and stressful one at times, and he ultimately narrowed down his initial list of programs to just SIUE and Saint Louis(m).
“I was looking for a place that I felt comfortable with both the coaches and players,” Bilyeu said. “The coaches are great. I just felt (SIUE) was a great fit as soon as I visited.”
Joining Amon will be Jonathan Campbell (Greensboro Youth SC) who has verbally committed to North Carolina(m) for 2012. Campbell is No. 15 in the South Atlantic Region.
Kyle Underwood (Dallas Texans) has verbally committed to West Virginia(m) for the 2012 season.
