Chivas USA ‘very close’ to signing HG

March 26, 2012

U.S. U18 Men’s National Team midfielder Marco Delgado is on the verge of signing a Home Grown contract with Chivas USA, according to two individuals close to the MLS club’s youth academy.

Delgado, who prefers the nickname Marky, has been training with the first team since preseason started. Unlike other teenagers, Delgado enjoys a flexible class schedule as he is enrolled in an online university.

The 16-year-old has featured at defensive midfield for the reserve team, and right midfield for the U18 Academy team. In previous interviews with TopDrawerSoccer.com, he said he preferred a more central role, which is where he also plays with the national team.

With his combination of sharp passing and diligent work ethic, Delgado has emerged as a top prospect for the MLS club following its merger with Cosmos Academy West in July. Delgado played with Cosmos Academy West (which was previously called LAFC, as well) in the Development Academy from 2009-2011.

Chivas USA has signed two Home Grown players in the past, Bryan de la Fuente and Cesar Zamora, but both are no longer with the team.

“Hopefully, it is wrapped up tomorrow,” one source added when the contract would be finalized.
