#21 NC State Endures Defeat at #11 UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The 21st-ranked NC State men’s soccer team (8-4-2) was denied an opportunity to win its fourth game over a ranked opponent this season on Tuesday evening when the 11th-ranked UNCW Seahawks (11-2-1) earned a 3-0 victory at UNCW Soccer Stadium.

 

Postgame Notes

-NC State outshot UNCW by a 7-5 margin and earned eight corners compared to the Seahawks’ two.

-UNCW has won four straight matches and is outscoring opponents this season 33-7.   

 

UNCW leading scorer Emil Elveroth scored two goals 77 seconds apart in the middle stages of the first half. In the 28th minute, he hit a shot first-time with his left foot from 16 yards out to make it 1-0 in favor of the Seahawks. He then doubled his team’s advantage in the 29th minute when he received a pass from teammate Shane Mecham with his back to goal, spun, and quickly shot and scored from 10 yards away.

 

The Wolfpack had a good chance to score in the 41st minute when freshman Ivy Brisma nearly capitalized on a loose ball in the UNCW defensive area. His attempt was blocked and rolled out to Jose Morales Jr., who stung a hard, low shot just wide of the far post.

 

The Seahawks extended their lead in the 53rd minute when Phillip Goodrum received a pass from Elveroth and hit an accurate shot low and just inside the far post from 10 yards away.

 

NC State returns to action at home on Saturday, Oct. 20 when No. 24 Syracuse comes to Raleigh. Kickoff between the Wolfpack and Orange is scheduled for 7 pm from Dail Soccer Stadium. The match will serve as NC State’s senior night and will be the final regular-season contest played in Raleigh this year.
