DOUBLE OT STRIKES AGAIN; DSU TIES HBU, 0-0
DOVER, Del. – Overtime games have been a common occurrence for the Delaware State University women’s soccer team as they’ve now played three of their last four games needing extra time. Saturday’s game ended in a better result for the Hornets however as they tied defending Great West Conference champion Houston Baptist University, 0-0, in double overtime at Alumni Stadium.
“This game hopefully signals some turning points for us this season,” DSU head coach Nitan Soni remarked. “One, we got through an overtime without losing, as we’ve done in three of our last four games. Two, even in the overtime periods, we were very threatening in the end. With the extra four minutes played in the past few days, our girls’ legs and bodies are hurting, but the desire and effort they’ve put up for each other has been tremendous. They did a great job really working hard for each other this afternoon, as they have all season, and they had to dig it out today as it wasn’t going to come easy.”
The Huskies dominated the Hornets in all categories, but DSU freshman goalie Katelyn Koslosky (East Islip, N.Y.) prevented HBU from ever getting on the scoreboard with her ten saves.
Del State only got off three shots on the day, coming from freshman Kate Numer (Lebanon, Pa.) and juniors Kelsey Gibson (Elizabethtown, N.Y.) and Candace Wyre (Smyrna, Del.). Numer posted the lone shot on goal.
Natalie Hager led the game with five shots while Molly Missimer had three shots on goal.
The tie was the Hornets’ second of the season as they move to 1-11-2 overall and 0-1-1 in conference play. The Huskies fall to 6-7-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the GWC. The matchup was the first in the history of the two schools’ women’s soccer teams.
“I think our girls will take a lot of confidence from this game moving into Friday and knowing we are able to hang with the best in our conference,” commented Soni. “For us, this is something positive that we can build from and move forward. It’s a good indicator of how we can play and we’ll use it as a springboard as we continue with conference play.”
DSU travels to Newark, N.J. on Friday to play NJIT at 6 p.m.
