Fordham Ties Record With 6th Straight Win

September 14, 2014

With a chance to make some program history, the Fordham women’s soccer team did not disappoint the home crowd on Sunday at Jack Coffey Field.  Senior Maria Lorena Canicatti had a goal and an assist, while the Fordham defense pitched its second shutout of the weekend, winning 2-0, over The Citadel.

With the win, Fordham improved to 6-1-0 on the year, giving the team’s best-ever start through seven games, while also tying a team record with its sixth straight win.  It also puts the Rams at 4-0 at home for the first time since 2004.  The loss puts The Citadel at 3-5-0.

The Rams didn’t wait long to get on the scoreboard, as Fordham opened the scoring in the 16th minute.  Nicol Natale made a run on the right side, firing a cross to Kate McDonnell near the top of the box.  McDonnell one-touched the ball, which hit the goalpost.  The ball then went directly to Maria Lorena Canicatti, who shot in her first goal of the season for a 1-0 lead.

Later in the game, Canicatti almost made it 2-0 in the second half.  In the 61st minute, Canicatti ripped a shot from distance off the crossbar, which was picked up by Jessica Widmann.  Widmann’s rebound shot didn’t miss the mark, netting her third goal of the season, giving Fordham a 2-0 lead.

From there it was all about the Rams’ defense, which posted its second straight shutout and fourth of the season.  The Rams limited the Bulldogs to just six shots, none of which were on goal.

Ally White earned her second shutout of the year for Fordham, while Naomi Carter had seven saves in net for The Citadel.

The Fordham women’s soccer team will next be in action on Friday, September 19th, as the Rams travel to Providence College for a 7:00 PM game against the Friars.
