MLS Acad. alumni ready for college impact
As the men’s Division I college season kickoff nears, it’s a chance for players to make another impression on coaches, scouts and fans across the nation.
For alumni of MLS Academies, it’s an opportunity to continue developing in hopes of one day landing an offer from the parent club. While plenty of these players will get chances, here’s a look at one player from each MLS Academy side who will get the chance to make an impact in the fall.
F Joey Calistri, Northwestern, Sophomore (Chicago Fire): As a freshman, Calistri bagged nine goals to lead the team, and he’ll need to be just as efficient this year to help the Wildcats contend in the Big Ten.
F Sergio Camargo, Coastal Carolina, Freshman (Toronto FC): The loss of Ashton Bennett up top means that the Chanticleers need to find goal scorers. Camargo, a three-year veteran of Toronto’s Academy setup, is sure to get some playing time and a chance to be one of those to provide offense.
D Alex Crognale, Maryland, Freshman (Columbus Crew): A hulking center back listed at 6-foot-5, Crognale has experience in Crew reserve games this year and is already tabbed as a starter at Sasho Cirvoski’s powerhouse program. If he adjusts quickly and learns on the fly, it will bode well for the Terps’ title hopes.
F Cole DeNormandie, Boston College, Junior (New England Revolution): DeNormandie has transferred closer to home ahead of the 2013 season and it will serve a dual purpose. He can be closely scouted by the Revolution while also testing himself at a higher level in the ACC.
