MONMOUTH DEFEATS MOUNT ST. MARY'S, 2-1
EMMITSBURG, Md. – Senior midfielder Ryan Clark (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) scored the game-winning goal in the 50th minute as the Monmouth University men’s soccer team defeated Mount St. Mary’s, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium. With the win, the Hawks improve to 8-3-2 (3-1-1 NEC), while the Mountaineers fall to 3-9-0 (1-4-0 NEC). The Hawks faced a difficult weekend of travel, going north to Quinnipiac on Thursday, before heading south to Mount St. Mary’s. The Mountaineers were idle this weekend until today’s match.
“I thought the guys showed terrific character getting two wins on the road in the conference, overcoming a difficult weekend of travel and adversity with some minor injuries and the flu,” said Monmouth Head Coach Robert McCourt. “I’m really proud of the way the guys handled themselves and got two results on the road.”
Joseph Schmid (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) scored his third goal of the season to get things started in the 34th minute. David Acuna Camacho (Heredia, Costa Rica/Costa Rica Youth National Team) was credited with an assist on the play. Just 1:38 later, the Mount scored the equalizer, with Mark Plaisance finding the back of the net off a free kick.
The Hawks retook the lead for good early in the second half, when Clark beat Mountaineers goalie Peter Steve on a shot front atop the 18-yard box at the 49:15 mark. Schmid earned the assist on the play.
For the game, the Mountaineers outshot the Hawks, 16-10, while Monmouth took a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Monmouth senior goalkeeper Alex Blackburn (Natick, Mass./Natick) earned the victory in net, making five saves. Steve made two saves in defeat for The Mount.
The Hawks return home to face NEC foe Robert Morris Friday. Kickoff under the lights on The Great Lawn is scheduled for 7 p.m.
