MONMOUTH, QUINNIPIAC PLAY TO SCORELESS DRAW

October 18, 2014

HAMDEN, Conn. – Sophomore goalkeeper Eric Klenofsky (Lincoln Park, N.J./DePaul Catholic) and the Hawks’ defense posted their fifth-straight clean sheet as the Monmouth University men’s soccer team earned a point at Quinnipiac with a scoreless tie, Saturday afternoon at Quinnipiac Soccer Field. The game represented a rematch of the 2013 MAAC Championship Game, which also went 110 scoreless minutes. With the tie, the Hawks are now 6-2-4 (2-0-3 MAAC), while the Bobcats move to 6-4-3 (3-0-2 MAAC). At the midpoint of MAAC play, the Hawks have yet to surrender a goal to a league foe.

For the game, Quinnipiac took a 14-6 edge in shots. However, the Hawks took a 3-2 edge in shots on goal. Quinnipiac also took a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. Dom Sarle (Huntington, N.Y./Bradenton Prep) led the Hawks with two shots on goal. Klenofsky made two saves in the draw. Quinnipiac’s Borja Angoitia collected three saves.

The Hawks got the first series of quality chances in the 11th and 12th minutes, as a Sarle shot was saved and Dan Pizzimenti’s (Manalapan, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) shot went wide. Quinnipiac’s James Doig got a shot on goal in the 15th minute, but Klenofsky was there to punch it aside. In the closing seconds of the half, QU’s Raphael Carvalho put a shot on goal, but again, Klenofsky was equal to the task.

Pizzimenti gave Monmouth its first chance in the second half, but Angoitia was there for the save in the 52nd minute. Quinnipiac was awarded a pair of corner kicks early in the second half, resulting in a blocked shot from John-John Diaz and a James Greco attempt that went off the post.

In the 65th minute, Sarle got deep into the box with possession and a defender on his hip. From a tough angle at the right post, he managed to get a shot on goal, but Angoitia made the save. Diaz had another chance for Quinnipiac in the 69th minute, but his shot off of quick transition from defense to offense for Quinnipiac sailed high from 20 yards atop the 18-yard box.

Neither team would get a shot on goal in the two overtime periods, with Quinnipiac taking a 3-1 edge in shots. Machel Baker had two shots for Quinnipiac in the extra sessions, but they went wide and high. Derek Luke (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) had the Hawks’ shot, but it was blocked.

Monmouth returns to action Wednesday when it travels to New Rochelle, N.Y., to take on Iona. Kickoff from Mazzella Field is scheduled for 3 p.m.
