Penalty Kick Does In Yale Again

September 15, 2013

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the second straight game, the Yale men’s soccer team lost when the only goal scored came on a penalty kick.

Ben Wysocki scored on the free kick with 9:45 left in the first half to lead Lehigh past the Bulldogs on a gorgeous afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Mountain Hawks were awarded the penalty kick when Gianfranco Giammatteo was fouled in the box.

The game was eerily similar to Yale’s 1-0 loss to Fairfield on Friday when the Stags scored the only goal on a penalty kick midway through the second half.

Like Friday, the Bulldogs again had the edge in shots and corner kicks but were left scratching their heads when the final horn sounded.

“It was another frustrating way to lose,” said Yale head coach Brian Tompkins.

Yale (1-3) outshot Lehigh 13-10 and had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

“We are not quite turning our chances into goals,” Tompkins said. “We need to capitalize when we are playing well.”

The Bulldogs have outshot their opponents in each of their four games this season.

Goalkeeper Blake Brown made two saves for Yale.

The Bulldogs had five of the first six shots in the game. Yale also applied pressure late and had a corner kick in the final seconds but was unable to capitalize.

The Bulldogs head to California next weekend. They face UC Santa Barbara on Friday at 10 p.m. EDT and then Cal Poly on Sunday at 4 p.m. EDT.
