SAINT FRANCIS (Pa.) DEFEATS MONMOUTH, 1-0
October 30, 2011
LORETTO, Pa. – Pablo Medina scored in the 44th minute as the Saint Francis (Pa.) University men’s soccer team defeated Monmouth, 1-0, Sunday afternoon on DeGol Field. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 12-5-0 (6-3-0 NEC), while the Red Flash improves to 9-6-2 (5-3-1 NEC). The game was moved to DeGol Field, the Red Flash’s football field, due to unplayable conditions at Stokes Soccerplex following yesterday’s winter storm.
“I’m proud of the way the guys performed today,” said Monmouth Head Coach Robert McCourt. “I thought we deserved better in the match, but give Saint Francis credit. They got the result. I feel like playing on these smaller-dimension fields is not conducive to good soccer, but as a program we have to be able to overcome these challenges.”
Medina chipped in his marker near the goal line off a cross from Wayne Tiller at the 43:42 mark. Saint Francis goalkeeper Darius Motazed made the goal hold up, corralling five saves to preserve the shutout. The Hawks’ Alex Blackburn (Natick, Mass./Natick) countered with two saves in defeat.
For the game, the Hawks outshot the Red Flash, 12-8, including a 5-3 edge in shots in goal. Monmouth also took four corners to the Red Flash’s one.
The Hawks close out the regular season next Sunday, when they play host to Mount St. Mary’s. Prior to the 1 p.m. start on The Great Lawn, the Hawks will honor their eight-member senior class as part of Senior Day ceremonies.
