Siena Soccer Edged at Army West Point

September 13, 2016

Rex Epps scored the decisive tally in the 69th minute and Army held on late to fend off Siena Soccer 3-2 in West Point. Senior striker Junior Rosero netted his first goal of the season for the Saints.

Army West Point (2-3) jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the 12th minute, when Nick Williams sidestepped a defender and finished the first tally of the match.

Siena (1-4-1) would respond just under 10 minutes later to even the score on a beautiful goal from Rosero. Freshman midfielder Conor McGlynn played a ball across midfield to sophomore captain J.C. Obregon who played in Rosero down the left side. Rosero corralled possession, made a hard cut to the right, and blasted a 25-yard strike over the keeper and just under the crossbar.

But the Black Knights would get a key score to go back in front with just 1:50 left in the half. Okheem Reilly tiptoed the end line and finished a tough angle look to send Army West Point into the locker room with a 2-1 lead.

The Black Knights extended their advantage to 3-1 after Epps finished a counter midway through the second half, but the Saints battled back.

Although Siena was only credited with five shots for the match, the Saints pressured hard in the offensive third of the field throughout the second half which led to several strong scoring opportunities. And in the 75th minute the persistent attack paid off, as a cross in from the left went off the leg of an Army West Point defender and into his own goal to pull Siena within 3-2.

But the Saints were unable to net the equalizer as they dropped their third straight. Junior goalkeeper Aleksa Radosavljevic made two saves in defeat.

Siena returns to action Saturday when they welcome Sacred Heart to Siena Turf Field for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
