Titans Fall to Cornell in Overtime; 2-1

September 15, 2013

ITHACA, N.Y.--- For the second consecutive contest Cal State Fullerton lost in excruciating fashion, as Conor Goepel scored the golden goal in the 96th minute, to lift Cornell to the improbable, 2-1, come-from-behind win Friday night at Charles F. Berman Field.

For Cornell (1-1-1) the win marks its second in a row, while it also extends the its non-conference unbeaten streak to 20 straight games.

As for the Titans (1-4), it was a bad case of déjà vu, who for the second straight match, never trailed until the very end, as they dropped back-to-back overtime contests for the first time since 2009 and lost consecutive road extra time matches for the first time since the 1987 campaign.

Junior midfielder Ian Ramos put Fullerton in a good position early in the second half, as he headed in his first goal of the season in the 64th minute, after David Beary played in a perfect ball from the left side for his first career assist to give the Titans a 1-0 lead.

Fullerton looked to be in good shape most of the way, but Cornell refused to give in, and finally broke through late, as Jake Rinow provided the dramatic equalizer in the 88th minute for his first goal of the season to ultimately send the game into extra time.

It was a close game throughout, and the stats showed it, as both squads ended things with six corner kick opportunities each, while Cornell held just a slight 14-13 advantage in shots taken.

The Titans will try and shake this three-game losing skid, when they travel to Colgate this Saturday at 10:00 a.m. PT

Game Notes: The Titans have dropped four consecutive road games going back to last season…Fullerton is now 1-13-2 in its last 16 road affairs…out of the Titans' four losses this season, three have come by one goal.
