October 21, 2013

After getting off to a 1-0 deficit, the Canisius College women’s soccer team rallied for a pair of goals en route to a 2-1 victory over Quinnipiac (2-7-2, 2-4-2 MAAC) at the Demske Sports Complex on a rainy Saturday night.

When the Bobcats took the lead in the 31st minute, it took just two minutes for the Griffs to answer. Freshman midfielder Kathleen Lawver played a long through ball into sophomore Brittany Krause. Quinnipiac keeper Natalia Grodzki came out to play the ball but Krause quickly dribbled around her to finish off the game-tying goal. The assist was the first of Lawver’s career.

Just 19 minutes after recording her assist, Lawver scored her first-career goal. Krause played a ball up the midfield senior forward Brianna Smith put a quick touch on the ball to find an open Lawver who’s uncontested shot found the back of the net for the eventual game winner.

“It was a really gritty performance from the girls,” said head coach Jim Wendling. “They’ve worked hard all year and they deserved it. We’ve lost eight goals by one goal this season and we finally got one back.”

The Griffs fell behind 6-1 in shots in the game’s first 30 minutes but finished out-shooting the Bobcats by a total of 14-10. The Griffs only allowed one shot on goal in the second half.

Senior goalkeeper Megan Tock recorded four saves in the contest.

The Griffs will return to action Saturday, Oct. 26 in the team’s final regular season contest. The Griffs will take on St. Peter’s (2-12-0, 0-8-0 MAAC) at 1 p.m.
