Stony Brook, N.Y. - Senior midfielder Leonardo Fernandes (North Babylon, N.Y.) of the Stony Brook men's soccer team has been named America East Player of the Week and named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week after an explosive three-goal, one-assist weekend that led to a pair of Seawolves victories.

Fernandes posted a goal and an assist in Stony Brook's 2-1 win over Fordham Friday night, and he followed that up with a pair of goals in a 4-0 win vs. Buffalo on Sunday. In both wins, he recorded the game-winning goal.

Against Fordham, Fernandes helped get the Seawolves on the board with a pass that spanned the length of the net over to freshman Alejandro Fritz (Budapest, Hungary), who buried the ball into the net. Fernandes then scored the game-winner in the 63rd minute when he took a low-lining cross from senior Antonio Crespi (North Babylon, N.Y.) and perfectly timed his kick with the ball in front of the net, easily getting it past the goalkeeper.

Against Buffalo, Fernandes had a free kick opportunity 22 yards away from the net. With Buffalo's defensive wall to his right, Fernandes' left foot blasted a shot into the top left corner of the net for the goal. Fifteen minutes later, he followed up by receiving a chip pass from Fritz in the box, and he beat the goalkeeper to the ball and played it over his head into the goal for a 2-0 Seawolves lead.

This is the fourth time Fernandes has been named America East Player of the Week in his career. He currently is second the conference in points (12) and assists (4). In 2011, he led the league in points (25) and goals (9).

Fernandes, who has four goals and four assists in seven games this season, is quickly rising up the Stony Brook career records chart. He is now fifth all-time in points (66), fourth all-time in goals (26) and tied for third all-time in assists (14). In the program's Div. I history, he is Stony Brook's all-time leader in points and goals.

Fernandes and the Seawolves are off to a 5-2-0 start and have won three straight matches. The team is back in action Wednesday at Sacred Heart at 3:30 p.m.
