LORETTO, PA. - The second-seeded Monmouth University women's soccer team fell to third-seeded LIU Brooklyn, 1-0, in the Northeast Conference semifinal on Friday afternoon at DeGol Field. With the loss, the Hawks end their season 10-7-2 overall, their seventh straight season with a double-digit victory total.

After an early goal, the Blackbirds outlasted Monmouth in a repeat of last year's semifinal to advance to the NEC Women's Soccer Championship final on Sunday for the third consecutive season.

"Unfortunately we gave up an early goal and were forced to chase the game," stated head coach Krissy Turner. "We created some good opportunities in the second half but could not get the equalizer."

LIU senior midfielder Alana Wohlers scored the game-winner in the fifth minute on an assist from senior defender Katie Egan.

Monmouth sophomore goalkeeper Jocelyn McCoy (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) made three saves during the match for the Hawks, while LIU's Brooklyn's Jessica Sexton earned her first shutout of the season, making three stops of her own.

MU, in its league-leading 15th NEC Tournament appearance, outshot the Blackbirds 8-5 overall, including 7-2 in the second half, and held an 8-1 edge in corner kick opportunities.

First Team All-NEC players Dana Costello (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) registered three shots, and Jennie Vartebedian (Blackwood, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) recorded two shots for Monmouth, while fellow first-teamers Alexandra Baca (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan)and Alexa Freguletti (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) and Second Team honoree Monique Plescia (Norwood, N.J./Northern Valley Regional) each added a shot.

In one of Monmouth's closest rivalries, the all-time series between the Hawks and LIU Brooklyn, dating back to 1997, now stands at 9-10-1 overall, while 16 of the 20 matches have been decided by a goal or less.

Turner added, "Overall the season saw growth from each of our players and our team as a whole. We fell short of our goal, which is always disappointing. We will work even harder to get back to the championships in 2013."
