Maine Holds Off Saints
Julia Mahoney scored in the first half and assisted on the game-winning goal in the second half to lead Maine over Siena Women’s Soccer 2-1 in Orono. Freshman Ashleigh Sarafin scored her first collegiate goal for the Saints.
Mahoney opened the scoring in the 12th minute, as Maine (3-2-1) would take a 1-0 lead into the break. Maine out-shot Siena (3-3-1) 13-2 in the first half, but Kamryn Peffley made four of her seven saves in the opening stanza to keep the Saints within striking distance.
A pair of freshman then connected to draw Siena level early in the second half. In the 53rd minute, freshman Emily McNelis fed her classmate Sarafin for the tying tally.
But 10 minutes later, Mahoney set up Nicole Bailey for the game-winning goal in the 63rd minute for Maine which has won three straight. Maine held a 21-8 advantage in shots, while capturing just the second-ever meeting between the programs and first in 18 years.
The Saints open conference play Saturday when they host Quinnipiac at noon in Loudonville.
