HILLSBORO, Ore. —
Coming back from a goal down at halftime, the Portland State women's soccer team earned a draw with Boise State, 1-1, as the Vikings closed out their home tournament Friday in front of 144 fans at Hillsboro Stadium.

The draw against the Broncos (1-0-1) extends the Vikings' Big Sky-record unbeaten streak to 15 matches, and extends the Vikings' home unbeaten streak to 10 matches. The Vikings (1-0-1) have not lost at home since dropping a 3-2 decision to then-No. 14 Marquette on Aug. 25 last season.

"Our effort and adjustments to come back today were very good," PSU head coach Laura Schott. "I'm proud of the way we changed our play and created chances in the second half of the game."

The Vikings drew even with the Broncos on a 55th-minute goal from senior midfielder Ariana Cooley, which came amid a dynamic second half that saw the team outshoot the Broncos 8-2 in the period.

Senior Kelsey Henningsen started the play that led to Cooley's goal, as she sent a free kick into the box from near midfield. Junior defender Torie Morris got her head on the end of Henningsen's free kick near the top of the box and flicked the ball on to Cooley, who found the ball at her feet in front of the goal with room around her. Cooley followed with a quick shot to the far post that found the side netting past Bronco goalkeeper Bailey Anderson, who had subbed in at halftime.

Cooley's goal answered Bronco midfielder Shannon Schueren's free-kick goal in the 43rd minute that opened the scoring in the match and put Boise State up 1-0 going into halftime. Schueren took the free kick about 10 yards up from the left end line, and bent the ball to the far post of the PSU goal. Junior goalkeeper Angela Haluska read the ball correctly, but couldn't get enough of a jump to knock the ball over the crossbar, and the ball bounced off her and into the goal.

Schueren's goal snapped the Vikings' shutout streak at 520:39, and snapped the team's home shutout streak at 406:04.

The Vikings held the Broncos out of goal for the rest of the match, however, as both defenses held out the opposing offense for the rest of the match.

Like in their 1-0 win over Utah Valley Friday, the Vikings created several chances for a second goal, but couldn't make the final connection. The Vikings had one of their best scoring chances come in the 41st minute, when junior forward Tamia Hasan sent a pass across the face of the goal to an open Cooley on the back post. The ball was just a little too much ahead of Cooley, however, and she couldn't catch up to it and direct a shot on frame.

Hasan also created the Vikings' best chance for a goal in either overtime period, as  she sprinted past everybody up the right side of the field in the 108th minute, before crossing the ball back to sophomore midfielder Aurora Bodenhamer in front of the goal. Bodenhamer had room around her, but couldn't get the ball out from under her feet, and Anderson snagged the ball from her.

Hasan sent some of her own hard shots on goal in the second half and overtime periods, as well, as she recorded all seven of her shots after halftime, and directed three of those on frame.

The Broncos, meanwhile, had their own chances for a second goal in the match, none better than in the 96th minute, when junior midfielder Brooke Heidemann drew both PSU defenders towards her on a 2v2 and sent a short centering pass to sophomore forward Baylee Blaser. Heidemann's pass left Blaser with an open look at the PSU goal for a possible game-winner, but Haluska made a diving save in goal for the Vikings, barely catching Blaser's shot across the ground to her left.

"This is a good game to build from," Schott said. "Boise is a good team and they are well coached. We would've loved a second win obviously, but I am really happy with our play today."

Overall, the Vikings outshot the Broncos 15-10 in the match, including a 13-4 advantage after halftime.

The Vikings will now head out on the road for the first time this season, as they travel to San Francisco, Calif. for the USF Tournament, hosted by the University of San Francisco. The Vikings will open the tournament against USF at 7 p.m. (PT) Friday, Aug. 29, then play the California Golden Bears at 12 p.m. (PT) Sunday, Aug. 31.
