Cougars Fall to Kennesaw State
KENNESAW, Ga. - The College of Charleston women's soccer team was downed, 1-0, by Kennesaw State on Friday night at the KSU Soccer Stadium.
CofC (1-1-0) will have short rest as they have to travel home and prepare for Sunday's match against Winthrop at Patriots Point at 12 p.m. KSU (2-1-0) pushed their home-opener winning streak to 10 matches.
"We created a lot of scoring opportunities but just couldn't convert tonight," said head coach Christian Michner. "I have to give them credit though. They worked hard and played really well. It was a match between two very-well matched teams and they got their goal and that was the difference."
The teams' parity showed in the virtually even stat sheet at the end of the match. Each team fired 12 shot attempts with the Cougars placing five on frame and the Owls four. CofC was the more disciplined team, though, and limited themselves to two fouls while KSU committed nine.
The Owls netted the game's lone goal in the 61st minute when Katrina Frost headed in a deflection off a corner kick after a scramble in the box. Nicole Calder and Alyssa Mahan picked up assists on the play.
The Cougars round out the non-traditional away-home weekend with Sunday's match with Winthrop. The Eagles will be looking to salvage their weekend in Charleston, S.C., after losing to The Citadel, 2-1, on Friday night.
"Sunday will be another tough game against a good team," said Michner. "It is a quick turn around but we love playing at Patriots Point in front of our home fans so our players will be ready to go. I'm expecting yet another great performance from our team and hopefully we'll get the result."
