Cougars Suffer Second Overtime Loss

August 31, 2014

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – For the second time in as many games, SIUE men’s soccer suffered on overtime defeat, falling 2-1 in double overtime Sunday at Korte Stadium.

Following an initial shot by Tulsa’s Austin Neil and a save by SIUE goalkeeper Kent Kobernus, Akeil Barrett pounced on the rebound and netted the game-winner from 15 yards away just 31 seconds into the second overtime period.

Following a scoreless first half, it was SIUE (0-2) who struck. Senior Christian Volesky picked up his first goal of the season in the 63rd minute of play. Left-winger Jason Hackett played a ball forward to Paul Scheipeter. Scheipeter and Volesky were 2-on-1 with Tulsa goalkeeper Jake McGuire. When McGuire came off his line, Scheipeter slid the ball right to Volesky who tucked it home from eight yards out.

The Golden Hurricane, who improved to 1-1, pulled level just 11 minutes later. Neil got the equalizer from a tough angle on the right side to make it 1-1 in the 74th minute.

Tulsa outshot SIUE Sunday 23-12. The Golden Hurricane held a 10-2 advantage in the second half. Both teams had three shots apiece in the first overtime period.

Volesky led SIUE with three shots, including two on goal. Garet Christianson, Lewis Ellis, and Travis Hoguet each recorded a shot on target. Neil and Aymar Sigue collected six shots apiece for Tulsa. Neil had four shots on goal.

Kobernus made a career-high eight saves in the loss. McGuire made four saves for the Golden Hurricane.

SIUE now hits the road for the first time with a Wednesday game at Memphis. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
