College Park, Md.—In its first match against a No. 1-ranked team in program history, the Georgia State men’s soccer team generated some near-miss scoring chances but couldn’t convert a goal and fell 4-0 to No. 1 Maryland on Monday night.

The historic match for the Panthers (3-5-0) got off to a tough start as the Terrapins scored in the 12th minute and never relinquished the lead. Senior Alex Vivanco earned GSU’s best scoring chance, a narrow miss from close range in the 24th minute.

This is the first time since 2001 the Panthers have played two teams from the powerful ACC conference in men’s soccer. GSU dropped a 3-0 match at Duke on Sept. 11 of this year. Georgia State has now faced 13 ranked teams in program history, including seven since the beginning of the 2011 season.

Senior goalkeeper Vincent Foermer made four saves in the match, including holding the Terrapins to just one goal in the first half. The Panthers, led by third-year head coach Brett Surrency, return to the GSU Soccer Complex on Saturday night for their Colonial Athletic Association home opener vs. Delaware (7 p.m.). Admission to all Georgia State men’s soccer home matches is free for all fans.

Maryland (7-0-1) freshman Tsubasa Endoh started the scoring with a strike at the 11:28 mark to put the Terrapins up 1-0 early. The Panthers held the Terrapins scoreless for the rest of the half, but Patrick Mullins scored two goals in the first four minutes of the second half to give Maryland a commanding 3-0 lead. Jake Pace added the fourth tally at the 66:21 mark.

The match was the first meeting between Maryland and Georgia State. Maryland sophomore Jordan Tatum earned the victory in net for the Terrapins.
