MONMOUTH CLAIMS MAAC TITLE WITH 2-0 WIN

November 5, 2013
LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLA. - Behind its program record 16th shutout and a pair of goals from the MAAC Rookie of the Year Alexis McTamney (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional), the top-seeded Monmouth University women's soccer team defeated second-seeded Fairfield University 2-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship game on Monday afternoon.

Monmouth, unbeaten in its last 14 matches, tied the program-record with its 17th win and broke the school-record for shutouts in a season with 16 during its MAAC Championship Game triumph. The Hawks, who have not allowed a goal in the last 763:58 of game action, earns the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, Monmouth's third trip all-time (2007, 2009).

MAAC Coach of the Year Krissy Turner said, "This was a terrific team victory for Monmouth Women's Soccer. The effort, teamwork and passion the players displayed was fantastic. I am very proud of this group of young women for an outstanding performance in our first ever MAAC Tournament. We look forward to representing the MAAC in the NCAA Tournament."

Following a scoreless first half, the Hawks, now 17-1-2 overall, got on the board in the first 1:30 of the second stanza when McTamney cleaned up a loose ball, following a goalkeeper save off senior Monique Plescia's (Norwood, N.J./Northern Valley Regional-Old Tappan) touch to give the Blue & White a 1-0 edge.

The Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the 68th minute when McTamney netted her second goal of the match, and team-leading 11th score of the season off an Alexa Freguletti (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) assist.

Monmouth held a 16-15 edge in shots, while Tournament MVP Ashley Lewis (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Boro) made six stops for the Hawks, earning her 13th solo clean sheet of the year.

Joining Lewis on the All-Tournament Team were McTamney, Freguletti and senior Dana Costello (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial).
