Pride Use Two Late Goals To Get Past Fordham

September 27, 2011

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra scored two goals late in the second half and Roberto Pellegrini made six saves in goal for his second shutout of the season as the Pride posted a 2-0 win over Fordham Tuesday night at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium. Hofstra improves to 4-3 with its second straight win, while Fordham falls below the .500 mark at 3-4-1.

The game was evenly played for the first 79 minutes. Each team took eight first half shots and had just a few good scoring chances. But the Pride capitalized on a set piece off a corner kick at 79:40 when Chris Griebsch drove the kick deep into the scoring area where it found the head of a divingTommi Kjartansson, who knocked it past Fordham keeper Ryan Meara for a 1-0 Pride lead. The goal was the first of the freshman's career.

The Rams put some pressure on the Pride following the goal. The Rams had three shots in the next three minutes with John Niyonsaba blasting a laser that Pellegrini got a hand on to keep the score tied. Pellegrini's next save off a shot by Tim Richardson led directly to the next Hofstra goal as he sent a punt directly to the feet of Brett Carrington. Carrington tipped it to Maid Memic and started a run down the center of the field. Memic's through ball found Carrington in the box and he beat Meara for his second goal in as many games and third of the season for the 2-0 lead at 85:37. Pellegrini was also credited with an assist on the play.

Meara, who entered the game with a 0.47 goals against average, made four saves in the loss. Richardson took a team-high five shots.

The final shot total was in favor of Fordham, 19-18, but Hofstra held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. The Hofstra defensive unit of Stephan Barea, Shaun Foster, Tyler Botte and Kjartansson also were extremely effective in neutralizing most of Fordham's offensive surges.

The Pride is next in action when they travel to Atlanta, Georgia, for a CAA matchup with Georgia State at 1 p.m.
