Brackets start shaping up in Dallas Cup
March 30, 2010
FRISCO, TEXAS – Brackets began to take shape as the 2nd day of play at the Dallas Cup came to a conclusion Monday evening.

More games will be played Tuesday, with group play ending for everyone on Wednesday. Quarterfinals begin Thursday for some age groups and Friday for others, with semifinals and finals of the prestigious event taking place Saturday and Sunday. The staff of the event have once again organized a world class event in every way.

U15: FC Dallas Juniors 3, Birmingham United 0

A good display of attacking soccer from Marco Feruzzi’s side saw the North Texas team keep its slim hopes for advancement (due to a Sunday loss) alive.

Erick Chapa was on first for the team, scoring two goals including one terrific finish, plus setting up Zachary Dunbar for another. Chapa said the team picked up steam as the match went on.

elite boys club soccer player erik chapaErik Chapa
“We started off real slow but toward the middle of the game we started getting our touches together and playing how we usually play,” he said. “Most of the time we have a few players going forward with the ball and having a few back to protect. We play well when we’re moving the ball on the ground. We had to show who we are today.”

The team got good defending on the day from Vernon Bailey, Daylon Gordon and Randall “Rojo” Scott. In the attack, Francisco Rodriguez was involved in a couple of good scoring chances, but Birmingham goalkeeper Brennen Vedel did well to thwart the efforts.

Chapa scored in the 1st half after collecting a long pass from Scott and finishing well. In the 2nd half, he teamed up with Dunbar on a counterattack, and then Chapa provided an excellent finish from 20 yards out to finish the scoring at 3-0.

Other Dallas scoring chances included a good serve by Rodriguez to Jason Machada that was headed just wide, and a hard shot from Homero Montemayor. Birmingham got good defensive efforts from Eran Basilico and Robert Stroupe.

U15 Boys National Team player Emerson Hyndman was ineffective and then removed from the game due to a charley horse. He will leave the team now to travel to Holland for a prestigious youth tournament involving clubs like Ajax, AC Milan and Bayern Munich, with the club’s U16 Academy team.

U16: De Anza Force 1, Houston Dynamo U16 Academy 0
Gregory Singer played Grant Depositar in with an excellent pass and the forward’s finish gave his team a lead it wouldn’t relinquish. Jonathan Junqua was very good in defense for Artie Cairel’s Northern California team.

Houston got good play on the day from Raffi Gregorian and Bradley Bourgeois, but ultimately couldn’t crack the De Anza net in the tournament opener for both teams.
