The U16 Brandon FC Flames headed into this past weekend with a chance to claim its division in the competitive U.S. Youth Soccer National League.

While the squad fell just short, the team heads into our revamped TeamRank as the top team in the U16 Florida Region.

Just where Brandon FC likes it. In the spotlight.

“This team lives for the big matches,” said coach Randy Belli. “They know that’s what’s going to make them better. You’re not going to get better by just beating up on teams in your league. This forces them to raise their play. These girls want to play at the next level.”

There are a lot of areas you could point to that make the Flames special. They’re currently getting a great scoring punch from attackers Taylor Decaire, Shea Rhoney and Taylor Meek.

And equally important, midfielders Jackie Simpson (recent South Florida commit) and Aubrey Riggins handle a lot of the dirty work essential for successful teams.

“They play the game the way it’s supposed to be played - indirect, and they make good decisions,” Belli said of his group. “When we make good decisions we can knock it around some teams.”

Other teams knocking around opponents include U14 Sunrise FC, the U15 Central Florida Kraze; U17 Florida Rush and U18  Ponte Vedra Storm. All these teams lead their age groups this month.

On the girl’s side our opening list features the following first-place squads: U14 Palm Beach Soccer Academy, U15 Central Florida Kraze, U17 Renegades and U18 Ponte Vedra.

The race has begun and our list is sure to be topsy turvy throughout the season, with regular updates.
