FRISCO, Texas - With two of the most important youth club soccer tournaments of the calendar year in Texas this week, there have been a number of noteworthy games. On Thursday, Generation adidas Cup action moved onto the semifinal round. Meanwhile, Dallas Cup advanced to the quarterfinal stage. New York Red Bulls 1, Los Angeles Galaxy 0

Capitalizing on a man-down, the Red Bulls advances to the semifinals of the MLS Generation adidas Cup Under 17 final Premier Division at 11 a.m. (CST)  Saturday. The Red Bulls' Brian Saramago put in the only goal in the 49th minute after a scoreless 35-minute first half.

The Red Bulls continued to look as strong as they have throughout the adidas Cup. The semifinal was played in a sun-drenched Toyota Stadium as the fourth game in five days. There will be a rest day Friday before the finals. The Red Bulls controlled possession most of the first half but were unable to score until the Galaxy got a red card. The Red Bulls' Rodrigo D'Andrea and Zach Ryan provided most of the pressure with Saramago. Talented '99 prospect Vincent Borden also helped apply second-half chances. REd Bulls goalie Xavier Kennedy-Reed posted the shutout just days after leading a shootout victory over Recife.

For the Galaxy, keeper Eric Lopez handled a barrage of Red Bulls goals well. Lopez can be a little tentative with his feet but is a standout shot blocker. The Galaxy's overall speed was evident while still able to pressure for goals despite being down a player. Patrick Murphy and youngsters Kevin Negrete (2000 birth year) and Salvador Segura (1999 birth year) shined for the Galaxy, which plays for third place Saturday.

Eintracht Frankfurt 0, FC Dallas 0 (Eintracht 5-3 PK MLS U17 adidas Cup)

The other semifinal featuring a U.S. team ended with Eintracht advancing on penalty kicks. Goalie Jan Hoffelner made a save after being substituted in the 70th minute for the immediate shootout. There was no overtime in the format. FC Dallas won three pool games and played impressively again in the semifinal. SMU commits Edwin Munjoma, Toshiki Yasuda, and Juan Ramirez put in penalty kicks.

Dallas Cup

AC Brea 2, Lonestar SC 2 (Brea 3-2 PK)

If you're going to be a 6-4, 14-year-old forward with a blonde hair cut in a mohawk and wear lime green shoes, you may as well score in a penalty kick in a shootout and then sub in for the goalie when he twists his elbow while making a shootout save. That was the afternoon for Aaron Tebay in a Dallas Cup quarterfinal. Tebay scored the third of four shootout goals. When goalie Sean O'Brien fell awkwardly on his elbow making a diving stop of a shot to his right, he had to leave the field. Tebay went in goal and survived the round as the Lonestar shooter hit the post and bounced out.

The undersized Lonestar showed tremendous spirit against the bigger, more physical Brea of Southern California. Lonestar got a wind-aided bounce in for a goal in the second half and forward Ryan Shultz put in the tying goal.

Brea took a 2-0 lead with goals from Philip Figuerres and Kevyn Lopez.

 

Golden State U14 3,  Tigres U15 1 

Impressive win for GoldenState  with two goals from Kevin Aguilar-Cervantes and one from Arturo Vasquez in a Dallas Cup quarterfinal win. Golden State played well in all phases against a talented Tigres, which couldn't must much offense with a harassing, physical Golden State defense.
