Thanksgiving weekend gave way to the 2010 San Diego Surf College Cup. The tournament encompassed U16 though U18 Boys and Girls State, Regional, and National Champions from various states in the western United States.

Here is the breakdown of every champion and how they got there.

U18 Boys Champion: Spokane Shadow

The only out-of-state victors, Washington-based Spokane Shadow blew through the California competition. After a 1-1 tie against United FC it shut out Davis SC Legacy, 1-0.

“Every game was extremely tight for us,” Spokane Shadow Head Coach Matt Leonard said. “ In the first game we gave up a goal in the first two minutes of the game. We came out nervous and tentatively.”

The following day the team defeated Juventus SC Monarcas, 2-0, to win its bracket and advance to the semifinals. Spokane Shadow’s 2-0 win against Santa Clara Sporting set up the title game against Palo Alto SC, who snuck in after a 3-2 victory over Texas Fire.

“It started with a Palo Alto corner which Curtis Hill recovered and made a deep punt,” Leonard explained. “Jamal Angell got a header on the ball and Christian buried it.”

Aside from the title, Spokane’s goalkeeper Curtis claimed the Goalkeeper of the Tournament Award for his shutout in four games.
