U17 WNT Camp To Decide CONCACAF Roster

U17 WNT Camp To Decide CONCACAF Roster
February 8, 2012

The U.S. U17 Women’s National Team is down to its final few matches before Albertin Montoya chooses an 18-player roster for the this month’s international trip to Spain, and more importantly, May’s CONCACAF Qualifying in Guatemala City, Guatemala.

One of them unfolded Monday night when the U.S. side dispatched the U17 German team in a 2-0 victory. The result was the first of three matches this week at the U17 camp in Sunrise, Florida, that will give Montoya the glimpse he feels he needs to finalize his group.

“There are seven players I know are going to be starting for us (in Spain) and so the other spots are still to be determined,” Montoya said. “Players have really stepped up and proved that they need to be in the discussion. It’s very close. They’re making it hard on me, which is good.”

Some new candidates to make the international trips emerged for the U.S. side including camp first-timer Brittany Basinger, who got the start with the defense and performed well. Midfielder Arielle Ship also saw some time on the backline for a change as Montoya played with new lineups.

The goal-scorers were Andi Sullivan, in the 53rd minute and Emily Bruder in the 69th, two players who don’t have much to worry about in terms of making the team.

Among those who are not sure bets, striker Margaret Purce also played a nice match alongside regular camp standout Summer Green.

Lauren Kaskie is back for her second straight camp after she missed out on a couple gatherings because of a fractured fibula.

“We’re really starting to come together and build chemistry all the way around,” Montoya said. “We created great chances and were very dangerous offensively. We’ll mix things up for our (final two matches) to make sure everyone plays. It’s the best way of making sure we come together.”

All of which serves to give Montoya final pieces of evidence before he chooses his team.
