U.S. Soccer announced big changes on Monday in what the Federation called an “unprecedented commitment to development of world-class players and coaches.”

Among the initatives that U.S. Soccer is bringing forward is an assessment and evaluation of the youth national teams, Development Academy program, and Development Academy clubs. USSF has not selected the organization that will conduct the evaluation, according to the release.

“Having an independent viewpoint ensures we are objective in the process and allows us to focus on improving the sport in this country,” U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati said in the release.

U.S. Soccer is also moving forward with a new course for coaches known as a Pro-License course. USSF has already introduced the F License and the Youth Technical Director Course as part of the new changes to the coaching arena.

The Development Academy is also set to expand with U.S. Soccer announcing the addition of the U12 age group starting in the fall of 2016. The Development Academy currently incorporates ages U14 to U18. The release also states that USSF is increasing the funding to the Development Academy scholarship program, which is used to remove “barriers to elite participation and allowing more players to play for a lower cost.”

On top of the additional resources devoted to the Development Academy, U.S. Soccer also made the addition of the U16 and U19 youth national team official on Monday. Both age groups will be staffed with full-time head coaches. The age groups will be added to both the men’s and women’s programs.

On top of all this, the Federation also spoke out about increasing the college soccer season as part of the sweeping changes.

“U.S. Soccer is collaborating with the NCAA to make changes to the college soccer model that will benefit the health and wellness of the athletes by extending the season over a longer period of time,” USSF said in the release.
