The No. 2 Maryland men's soccer team passed its first conference test Friday night with a 4-0 rout of No. 8 Boston College at a festive Ludwig Field.

Sophomore Patrick Mullins scored twice and goalkeeper Will Swaim secured his third shutout of the season as the Terrapins outshot the Eagles, 18-4. Head coach Sasho Cirovski, who was honored before the game for earning his 300th win on Sept. 4 against Radford, has led the Terps to their first 5-0 start since 2004.

"To me this was a very special night to be honored for my win milestone," Cirovski, who was given a game ball signifying his 300th career win by Director of Athletics Kevin Anderson, said. "The homage that our fans paid was very humbling."

It only took 10 minutes for the Terps to score on Boston College (4-1-0) as Sunny Jane looped a ball to senior Casey Townsend at the top of the box. Townsend settled the pass with his chest and volleyed a low shot past Eagles goalkeeper Justin Luthy to score his team-high fifth goal of the season.

The sides battled back and forth for the remainder of the half, but Maryland quickly struck again two minutes into the second stanza. Jane set up Mullins eight yards from the goalmouth and Mullins finished, doubling Maryland's cushion, 2-0.

The Terps continued to pressure the Eagles and freshman Alex Shinsky dazzled the crowd before playing a low cross from the end line. Jordan Cyrus flicked the cross to Mullins for the tap-in and the lead moved to a commanding three.

Maryland saved its most spectacular goal for last, however. Luthy had no chance as sophomore Taylor Kempsliced through the midfield and blasted a rocket into the upper 90's from 30 yards out to cap the scoring at four.

The Terrapin defense caused Boston College to be largely ineffective on the offensive end throughout the night. The defense has given up only two goals in five games this season.

"I was delighted with the result tonight. I think that was our best overall performance thus far," Cirovski said. "I do have to give some kudos to our grounds staff. This field played incredible after all the rain and they worked all day long to get it prepared so I am very pleased with that."

Maryland travels in-state to UMBC on Tuesday, Sept. 13, as it looks to sustain its remarkable 3.2 goals-per-game average.
