Bakersfield Defeats San Diego State 1-0

September 11, 2014

SAN DIEGO, Calif.-Jamie Carey-Morrell’s (Fr., Stevenage, England, The Nobel School) goal in the eighth minute proved to be enough as Bakersfield defeated San Diego State 1-0 Friday night in 2014 opener for both teams. Carey-Morrell scored the gamewinner when he connected on a blast from just outside the 18 that came from a short corner kick. Joe Masumiya (R-Sr., Lakewood, Calif., Lakewood HS) earned the assist.

Roadrunner goalie Nicolas Clever (So., Cologne, Germany, Gesamtschule Kuerten) turned back four Aztec opportunities in the second half including two from point blank range. The Bakersfield defense held tight as San Diego State outshot the Roadrunners 13-6. Clever saved all five SDSU shots on goal. The Bakersfield victory was the first for the Roadrunners in seven tries against the Aztecs.

"It was a solid team defensive effort," said Bakersfield head coach Richie Grant. "We had some big saves from Nick (Clever). It was a super finish from Jamie on a well worked corner kick."

The Roadrunners are at UNLV’s Johann Memorial Classic next weekend playing Howard (Friday) and IPFW (Sunday).
